Day 1: Bayfield Main Street & Island Life
From downtown Bayfield, you can walk or drive onto the ferry to Madeline Island. The ride itself is part of the fun, with open views of the lake and shoreline. Once you’re on the island, you can visit the local museum, explore small shops, and soak up the slower, island-town pace before heading back to Bayfield for the evening.
- Bayfield’s main street is packed with small, independent shops and galleries. You’ll find pottery, paintings, jewelry, woodwork, and other pieces made by local artists who live and work around the Bayfield Peninsula. Take your time going in and out of storefronts, talking with owners, and seeing how much of the town’s identity is tied to the lake.
Fun fact: In winters cold enough for safe ice, the route between Bayfield and Madeline Island sometimes becomes an official “ice road.” It’s treated like a state road and lined with Christmas trees to mark the path across the frozen lake.
Day 2: Country Roads & Lakeside Villages
In the evening, pick one of these villages as your base. Many weekends, you’ll find live music, busy bars, and people gathered around campfires or picnic tables. Look for places serving fresh and smoked Lake Superior fish—whitefish, trout, and more—so you can end the day with a meal that tastes like the lake you’ve been driving beside all day.

Day 3: Lakeside Escape in Red Cliff
Your last day is all about slowing down in Red Cliff. Instead of packing in more miles, you’ll stay close to the water—enjoying a lakeside hotel resort & casino with RV and camping-style amenities, a marina, and good food with a view of Basswood Island.

Sleep in a little, then wander the property. Red Cliff’s lakeside hotel area gives you many of the comforts of camping—RV spots, easy access to the shoreline, and space to sit outside—without having to break down a tent. Spend time walking near the marina, watching boats come and go, and grab a meal in the dining area where the view of Basswood Island is hard to beat. In the evening, try your luck at the casino or enjoy a cocktail at the bar or out on the patio while you watch the northern lights dance over Lake Superior.
Fun fact: Legendary Waters hotel was designed so that every room has a view of Lake Superior, making even a lazy day feel like a front-row seat to the big lake.
